Last time, we provided a detailed explanation of how to properly wear contact lenses. Today, we’ll take a closer look at how to remove contact lenses quickly and safely. Many people who wear contact lenses regularly may find it difficult to remove them. Incorrect removal techniques can increase the risk of eye injury. So, how can you remove contact lenses without harming your eyes? Let’s take a look.
Step 1: Clean your hands thoroughly
Hand hygiene is crucial when handling contact lenses. Failure to maintain proper hygiene can lead to bacterial infections, discomfort while wearing the lenses, and even severe eye inflammation and keratitis. Here are some effective ways to clean your hands:
- Use hand soap that does not contain moisturizing ingredients.
- Dry your hands with a lint-free towel or a hand dryer.
- Keep your nails short to prevent bacteria from hiding under them and to avoid accidentally injuring your eyes.

Step 2: Remove your contact lenses
1. Prepare the eyes:
- Blink to produce tears and keep your eyes moist.
- Look up and gently pull down your lower eyelid with the middle finger of one hand.
2. Movable lens:
- Slowly bring your index finger closer to your eye.
- Gently touch the lower edge of the lens and slide it onto the white part of your eye. This ensures that the lens does not sit directly against the cornea, thereby reducing the risk of injury.

Note: Avoid picking up the lens directly from the cornea, as this may cause damage to the corneal epithelium, especially when the lens is dry and tightly adhered to the cornea.
3. Removing the lens:
- Gently pinch the edge of the lens between your index finger and thumb, and squeeze toward the center to remove the lens.
- Be gentle, and get into the habit of starting with the same eye every time.

By following these steps, you can remove your contact lenses correctly and safely. Did you learn how?
